The goal of the present paper is to show that the study of the map from the class of probability measures \(\mu\) on the unit circle to their associated CMV matrices, that is, pentadiagonal unitary matrix operators \(U\) in \(\ell^2(Z_+)\) with the properties: \(e_0=(1,0,\ldots)\) is a cyclic vector for \(U\), and the associated spectral measure for \(U\) and \(e_0\) is exactly \(\mu\), is greatly facilitated by using Riemann-Hilbert techniques. The authors do this by producing new and transparent proofs of some classical and central theorems in the theory of Toeplitz operators and orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Among the problems under consideration the approximation of the inverse of a Toeplitz operators, the Baxter and the Strong Szegő theorems and the Born approximation.
