The authors present a nonsemisimple generalization of the Verlinde formula and apply this new important concept to the theory of \((1,p)\) models for the Virasoro algebra. In particular, they consider the maximal local \(W\)-algebra \(W(p)\) associated to each \((1,p)\)-models and calculate the characters of \(2 p\) irreducible \(W(p)\)-representations. By using modular transformation of characters and the generalized Verlinde formula, the authors find a nonsemisimple fusion algebra associated to irreducible \(W(p)\)-representations.
