Let R be a ring with involution and let S be the set of all symmetric elements. In the spirit of ordinary ring theory, R is S-radical over a subring A if for every \(s\in S\) there exists an integer \(n=n(s)\) such that \(s^ n\in A\). The main result of the paper under review claims the following: let R be a prime ring with involution and char(R)\(\neq 2,3\), which is S-radical over a subring A. If R has no nonzero nil right ideals and A satisfies a polynomial identity of degree d, then R satisfies a polynomial identity too and PI-deg(R)\(\leq d\). (By definition, \(PI\)- deg(R)\(=k\) if k is the maximal integer such that all identities of R are in the T-ideal of the \(k\times k\) matrix algebra.)
