This paper deals with the classification of normal complex affine surfaces \(X\) on which there is a nontrivial algebraic action of the additive group of complex numbers, \(\mathbb{C}^ +\). Such surfaces are ``cylinderlike'' in that they contain open dense subsets of the form \(Z \times \mathbb{C}\). In fact, they can be constructed by replacing certain fibers of the projection \(Z \times \mathbb{C} \to Z\) with exceptional fibers. The author studies various numerical invariants of these fibers that can be used to classify \(X\). He also constructs minimal equivariant compactifications, \(\overline X\), and uses information about the divisor \(D = \overline X \backslash X\) to compute the singular homology of \(X\) and the first homology group at infinity in the case where no multiple fibers occur.
