R-proximities, originally introduced by \textit{D. Harris} [Pac. J. Math. 34, 675-685 (1975; Zbl 0198.553)], generalize Efremovič proximities in such a way that a topological space is R-proximizable if and only if it is regular. RE-proximities (respectively, RC-proximities) on a regular topological space are those R-proximities defined by declaring two sets to be close when their closures in some regular (respectively, regular- closed) extension meet. The author defines a preregular system of filters on a regular topological space X in terms of certain properties possessed by a system of traces of neighborhood filters of points in a regular extension of X, and the RE-proximities on X are characterized as those determined by preregular systems of filters on X. The RC-proximities among the RE- proximities are also characterized. Some notions from the theory of syntopogeneous spaces are employed in the development.
