The purpose of the paper is to prove that, for a finitely generated group \(G\) with exponential growth, the isoperimetric inequality [see \textit{M. Gromov}, Asymptotic invariants of infinite groups. Geometric Group Theory, Vol. 2 (Lond. Math. Soc. Lect. Note Ser. 182, 1993; Zbl 0841.20039)]: \(|\partial \Omega |/|\Omega|\geq \text{constant}/\log |\Omega|\) is in fact optimal provided \(G\) is polycyclic. Here \(|\Omega|\) is the cardinality of a finite subset \(\Omega\subset G\) and \(\partial \Omega\) is its boundary (relative to a set \(S\) of generators of \(G\)). See also \textit{R. I. Grigorchuk} [Proc. Int. Congr. Math., Kyoto 1990, 325-338 (1991; Zbl 0749.20016)] and \textit{N. Th. Varopoulos} [ibid., 951-957 (1991; Zbl 0744.43006)].
