This is a delightful essay which combines well-told stories of the author's education and academic career with useful information on the persons with whom he collaborated and the research that resulted from the collaboration. Of his student years at Harvard the author remarks that `the faculty was awe-inspiring': it included G. D. Birkhoff, E. V. Huntington, J. L. Walsh S. MacLane, Garrett Birkhoff and M. H. Stone. He says `Stone has been a decisive influence on my life for over half a century'. After war-time work on Operations Research in the Air Force, the author was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship at Princeton (where `there was a galaxy of eminences'). In 1948 he took up a post at the University of Washington in Seattle where he stayed for the rest of his career - but with fruitful years away at such places as Austin Texas, Moscow and Erlangen. Altogether this is a model of interesting though concise autobiography.
