Considering a set of basis functions for which the actuator response can be described in a small number of terms, a generalization of the controllability results in terms of any set of orthogonal basis functions is obtained. It is shown that the profile can be divided into controllable and uncontrollable parts. If the basis functions are spectral, then these parts can in turn be related to the high and low spectral components. For a chosen basis function it is possible to reduce the dimensionality. In the simulations, a process with fewer coefficients than the number of actuators is presented. Given certain experimental conditions, it is possible to reduce the estimation problem to a small number of single-input single-output estimators with a small number of parameters.
