The author studies instantaneous shrinking of the support of solutions of the Cauchy problem for a class of nonlinear diffusion-reaction equations which may be classified as being of degenerate parabolic type as the following: \[ u_t= \sum^n_{i= 1} \Biggl(|\nabla u|^{p- 1} {\partial u\over \partial x_i}\Biggr)- |u |^{\lambda- 1} u,\quad u(x, 0)= u_0(x),\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^n,\quad t> 0, \] where \(p\) and \(\lambda\) are positive numbers, \(\nabla u= \text{grad}_x u\). He obtains the following theorem: In both of the cases (i) \(p\geq 1\), \(0< \lambda< 1\), (ii) \(0< \lambda< p\), \(1> p> (n- 2)/(n+ 2)\) for \(n> 2\), \(1> p> 0\) for \(n\leq 2\) the support of \(u(x, t)\) is bounded for \(t> 0\), even if it is unbounded for \(t= 0\).
