The author discusses the global attractivity of the zero solution for a class of scalar delay differential equations motivated by a number of population growth models. The analysis is quite delicate and the obtained results provide positive (sometimes partial) answers to conjectures proposed in \textit{K. Gopalsamy} [Houston J. Math. 16, 347-356 (1990; Zbl 0714.34113)] and \textit{Y. Kuang} [Delay differential equations with applications in population dynamics, Academic Press (1993; Zbl 0777.34002)] and improve some earlier results of \textit{K. Gopalsamy}, \textit{M. R. S. Kulenovic} and \textit{G. Ladas} [Appl. Anal. 31, 225-237 (1988; Zbl 0639.34070)] and \textit{Y. Kuang} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 17, 627-634 (1991; Zbl 0766.34053)].
