Connections between reflexivity and the fixed-point property for nonexpansive self-mappings of nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subsets of a Banach space are investigated. In particular, it is shown that \(\ell'(\Gamma)\) for uncountable sets \(\Gamma\) and \(\ell^\infty\) cannot even be renormed to have the fixed-point property. Definition. A Banach space contains an asymptotically isometric copy of \(\ell'\) if for every sequence \(\{\varepsilon_n\}\) decreasing to 0, there exists a sequence \(\{x_n\}\) of norm-one elements in \(X\) such that \[ \sum_n(1-\varepsilon_n)|\alpha_n|\leq|\sum_n\alpha_nx_n|\leq\sum_n|\alpha_n| \] for all sequences \(\{\alpha_n\}\) of real numbers. Main results. Theorem 2. If \(\Gamma\) is uncountable, then any renorming of \(\ell'(\Gamma)\) contains an asymptotically isometric copy of \(\ell'\). Consequently, if \(\Gamma\) is uncountable, \(\ell'(\Gamma)\) cannot be renormed to have the fixed-point property. Corollary 3. If \(X\) is a separable Banach space containing an isomorphic copy of \(\ell'\), then \(X^*\) cannot be renormed to have the fixed-point property. In particular, \(\ell^\infty\) cannot be renormed to have the fixed-point property. Corollary 4. If a Banach space \(X\) contains a complemented copy of \(\ell'\), then \(X^*\) cannot be renormed to have the fixed-point property. Proposition 7. If a Banach space \(X\) contains an asymptotically isometric copy of \(C_0\), then \(X\) fails to have the fixed-point property.
