The authors are interested in semantical or syntactical equivalents of the notions ``sketchable by a finitary (respectively, geometric) sketch''. They review known results, add some examples, and formulate a new syntactic equivalent of finitary sketchability which seems highly technical. In a note added in proof, they announce much better results in a forthcoming paper by these authors jointly with \textit{P. T. Johnstone} and \textit{J. A. Makowsky}.
