The work under review characterizes the elements in the commutator Lie algebra \([L_K(E),L_K(E)]\) of the Leavitt path algebra \(L_K(E)\). Then the authors give necessary and sufficient conditions to determine which Lie algebras of the form \([L_K(E),L_K(E)]\) are simple (for a row finite graph \(E\) such that \(L_K(E)\) is simple). Some of the results in this line are: (1) If \(E\) has infinitely many vertices and \(L_K(E)\) is simple then \([L_K(E),L_K(E)]\) is simple; (2) If \(E\) is a finite graph and \(L_K(E)\) is simple, then \([L_K(E),L_K(E)]\) is simple if and only if \(1\not\in [L_K(E),L_K(E)]\). The paper also gives conditions under which the algebra \([M_d(L_K(E)),M_d(L_K(E))]\) is simple. Finally the work under review studies the simplicity of \([L_K(E),L_K(E)]\) when \(L_K(E)\) is purely infinite simple in terms of \(K_0\)-theory.
