This paper builds on techniques previously developed by Barbu, Lasiecka and Triggiani and, under certain assumptions, presents the existence of optimal solutions and a maximum principle for a problem of optimization whose constraints are governed by time-periodic Stokes-Oseen equations with boundary control. In general, the problem has potentially important applications such as studying the flow occurring in the presence of swimming microorganisms, the flow of lava, paint technology or the flow of viscous polymers. The assumed conditions for the existence of optimal solutions are verified in the case of a plane periodic laminar flow in a two dimensional channel. The paper is well written with clear arguments and as such it not only develops an important direction of research in fluid dynamics but it also constitutes a good didactic material.
