Let \(L\) be an \(n\)-dimensional Lie algebra over a field \(F\) of characteristic zero and \(D\) be a derivation of \(L\). If the degree of \(D\) is \(n-1\), that is \(D^{n-1}= 0\), but \(D^{n-2}\neq 0\), then \(D\) is called almost dimensionally nilpotent. The author proves that if \(n> 6\) and \(n\) is odd, then there exist two nonsolvable Lie algebras of dimension \(n\) such that there is some element \(x\in L\) with \(\operatorname {ad} x\) being almost dimensionally nilpotent; and if \(n> 6\) and \(n\) is even, then there is just one such Lie algebra of dimension \(n\). It is also shown that such ad-nilpotent elements are all conjugate under \(\Aut(L)\).
