The authors extend the study on the Newton polygons for tetragonal curves and smooth planar curves presented in [Doc. Math. 20, 927--942 (2015; Zbl 1365.14042)] and [``Linear pencils encoded in the Newton polygon'', Int. Math. Res. Not. 2017, No. 10, 2998--3049 (2017; \url{doi:10.1093/imrn/rnw082})] respectively, to the case of curves on \(\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1\). They prove that a non-degenerate curve with respect to a Newton polygon of genus different from \(4\) can be embedded in \(\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1\) if and only if the convex hull of the interior lattice points of the Newton polygon is (up to a unimodular transformation) a standard rectangle i.e., non-degenerate curves in \(\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1\) have an intrinsic Newton polygon if their genus is \(\neq 4\).
