The authors develop methods for calculating relations between class numbers of subfields of a given Galois extension. Their paper is based on earlier work by \textit{R. Brauer} [Math. Nachr. 4, 158-174 (1951; Zbl 0042.03801)] and \textit{S. Kuroda} [Nagoya Math. J. 1, 1-10 (1950; Zbl 0037.16101)], who exploited character relations between permutation characters of subgroups of the Galois group. Using the computer algebra system MAGMA and improvements on bounds for quotients of class numbers, they are able to extend the power of that method considerably. For example, they give an algorithm for computing bounds on class number quotients for arithmetically equivalent number fields of fixed Galois group.
