The scattering problem of the 2D Helmholtz equation is solved numerically by preconditioning the dense linear system obtained by discretizing this scattering problem in second kind Fredholm integral form. The preconditioning is based on a low rank approximation of the system obtained from the singular value decomposition of the system matrix. Numerical results obtained using Krylov subspace methods indicate that the above preconditioning technique speeds up calculations significantly.
