In this paper, the author identifies the Balmer spectrum of the homotopy category of finite rational $G$-spectra for a compact Lie group $G$ with the set of conjugacy classes of closed subgroups of $G$. \par To explain the results in more detail, we recall from \textit{P. Balmer} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 588, 149--168 (2005; Zbl 1080.18007)] that a prime ideal in a tensor triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$ is a proper full subcategory $\mathfrak{p}$ that is closed under completing triangles, retracts, and tensoring with arbitrary objects and that has the property that whenever $A \otimes B \in \mathfrak{p}$, then $A$ or $B$ is in $\mathfrak{p}$. If $G$ is a compact Lie group, then the homotopy category of the symmetric monoidal stable model category of rational $G$-spectra is a tensor triangulated category. It is equivalent to the category of rational equivariant cohomology theories. For any closed subgroup $K$ of $G$, the full subcategory on the objects whose $K$-geometric fixed points are non-equivariantly contractible is a prime ideal in the homotopy category of finite rational $G$-spectra. The above mentioned main result states that this induces a bijection between the conjugacy classes of closed subgroups of $G$ and the prime ideals in the homotopy category of finite rational $G$-spectra. The author also shows that the prime ideal associated with $K$ is contained in the one associated with $H$ if and only if $K$ is conjugate to a normal subgroup $L$ of $H$ with $H/L$ a torus. Moreover, he provides a classification of the thick and localizing tensor ideals in the homotopy category of rational $G$-spectra. One main ingredient used to obtain the results in this paper is the algebraic classification of free rational $G$-spectra from joint work of the author with \textit{B. Shipley} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 46, No. 1, 133--142 (2014; Zbl 1294.55002)]. \par The Balmer spectrum of the (not rationalized) homotopy category of finite $G$-spectra for a compact Lie group $G$ is determined in subsequent joint work of the author with \textit{T. Barthel} and \textit{M. Hausmann} [``On the Balmer spectrum for compact Lie groups'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1810.04698}]. The latter paper also provides an alternative proof for the main results in the paper under review and connects it to the work in the finite group case by \textit{P. Balmer} and \textit{B. Sanders} [Invent. Math. 208, No. 1, 283--326 (2017; Zbl 1373.18016)] and \textit{T. Barthel} et al. [ibid. 216, No. 1, 215--240 (2019; Zbl 1417.55016)].
