The article deals with a classical extension problem: Given a CR-submanifold \(S\) in a complex manifold \(Z\) and a biholomorphic map \(f:U\rightarrow V\) between open sets \(U\) and \(V\) of \(Z\) with \(f(U\cap S)\subset V\cap S\). When can \(f\) be extended to a biholomorphic automorphism \(Z\rightarrow Z\)? In the past this question has been considered mainly under the assumption that \(S\) is a compact hypersurface and the Levi form of \(S\) has special non-degeneration properties. In the present article the authors study the problem in the following homogeneous setting: Let \(Z\) be a Hermitian symmetric space of compact type and \(L\) the identity component of the complex Lie group Aut\(Z\) of biholomorphic automorphisms of \(Z\). Let \textbf{S} be a real form of \(L\) and \(S={\mathbf S}a\), \(a\in Z\), an \textbf{S}-orbit in \(Z\) with the additional property that the Lie algebra of germs of real-analytic local vector fields on \(S\) in some point \(a\in S\) is finite-dimensional. Abbreviate this description by saying \((S,Z)\in\mathfrak C\) and note that \((S_1,Z_1),(S_2,Z_2)\in\mathfrak C\) implies \((S_1\times S_2,Z_1\times Z_2)\in\mathfrak C\). The authors prove the following extension theorem: Let \((S,Z)\), \((S',Z')\in\mathfrak C\) and \(\varphi:U\rightarrow U'\) a real-analytic CR-equivalence between open sets \(U\subset S\) and \(U'\subset S'\). Then \(\varphi\) has a unique extension to a biholomorphic transformation \(Z\rightarrow Z'\). In particular, there are canonical isomorphisms between Aut\(S\) and \(\{g\in \text{Aut}Z\,| \,g(S)=S\,\}\) and between the germ automorphism group Aut\((S,a)\) and \(\{g\in \text{Aut}S\,| \,g(a)=a\}\) for every \(a\in S\). The authors are in particular interested in the case of tube domains and their main result is related to this situation: Assume that \(Z\) is an irreducible symmetric space of compact type and that the real form \textbf{S} of \(L\) has an open orbit in \(Z\) which is biholomorphically equivalent to a bounded symmetric domain of tube type. Let \(S\) be another \textbf{S}-orbit in \(Z\) which is neither open nor totally real in \(Z\). Then \(S\) is a minimal \(2\)-nondegenerate CR-manifold and \((S,Z)\in\mathfrak C\). The authors present several examples and applications of this result. Jordan algebraic methods play an essential role in the proof.
