Given a set S of \(n\times n\) matrices over a field F the problem surveyed is the determination in an effective manner of the algebra A generated by S. This general problem gives rise to a number of subproblems, four of which are listed. The author then surveys several approaches and techniques used to attack these subproblems. He summarizes much of what is known and has an extensive bibliography of relevant articles. Typical examples of the sorts of results discussed are theorems giving conditions under which the algebra A is similar to an algebra of matrices in block triangular form.
