The solution manifold to the nonlinear equation \(F(\lambda,u)= 0\) in a neighbourhood of an approximate zero is investigated. Here, \(F\) is a sufficiently smooth nonlinear mapping with values in a Banach space, \(\lambda\) is a real-valued vector, and \(u\) is element of another Banach space. The derivative of \(F\) with respect to \(u\) is assumed to be a Fredholm operator of index \(0\). However, the main interest is not in the solution manifold itself but in the behaviour of given so-called unfolding functionals acting on the solution manifold. The author shows that the description of the solution manifold can be reduced to the solution of a problem of lower dimension. This generalizes the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction technique known from bifurcation theory. The author's approach covers both perfect and imperfect singularities. Moreover, no precise information about the null spaces or the location of the singularities is needed. The paper ends with the example of a finite-dimensional nonlinear eigenvalue problem and a nonlinear boundary value problem.
