This book comprises eleven chapters devoted to optimization in structural engineering. The first chapter, ``Developments on metaheuristic-based optimization in structural engineering'', written by Aylin Ece Kayabekir, Gebrail Bekdaş, and Sinan Melih Nigdeli, reviews the latest advances in applications of metaheuristic algorithms to structural engineering problems such as truss structures, reinforced concrete members, frames, bridges and structural control. The next chapter, ``Artificial intelligence and machine learning with reflection for structural engineering: a review'', by Melda Yücel, Sinan Melih Nigdeli, and Gebrail Bekdaş, gives a review of machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence evolution with applications. It includes a number of structural engineering examples where optimum parameters are predicted by means of artificial intelligence models and machine learning techniques. The chapter ``Design optimization of multi-objective structural engineering problems via artificial bee colony algorithm'' by Serdar Carbas, Deniz Ustun, and Abdurrahim Toktas develops a Pareto-based multi-objective artificial bee colony algorithm. Efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated on a two-bar truss design problem, an I-beam design problem, and a steel-welded beam design problem. An improved version of the charged system search algorithm was applied for optimization of the fuzzy logic controller implemented in a 20-story steel structure with nonlinear behavior in the chapter ``Optimal parameter identification of fuzzy controllers in nonlinear buildings based on seismic hazard analysis using tribe-charged system search'' by Siamak Talatahari and Mahdi Azizi. The efficiency of the proposed tribe-charged system search in reducing the building responses and damages caused by earthquakes was demonstrated by multiple testings. The next chapter, ``Current trends in the optimization approaches for optimal structural control'', written by Maziar Fahimi Farzam, Himan Hojat Jalali, Seyyed Ali Mousavi Gavgani, Aylin Ece Kayabekir, and Gebrail Bekdaş, is devoted to recent results in the optimal control of structures. It gives a literature review and analytical discussion on the optimal design of various control devices. Active controlled structures, including soil-structure interaction and located on different soil types, are investigated under different types of ground motions to determine the effect of earthquakes in the chapter ``The effect of SSI and impulsive motions on optimum active controlled MDOF structure'' by Serdar Ulusoy, Sinan Melih Nigdeli, and Gebrail Bekdaş. Teaching-learning-based optimization and harmony search algorithms are used to determine structural responses under seismic excitation. The firefly algorithm, teaching and learning-based optimization, ion motion optimization, drosophila food-search optimization, and interactive search algorithms are applied to weight minimization of truss systems in the chapter ``Metaheuristic algorithms for optimal design of truss structures'' written by Ali Mortazavi and Vedat Togan. A structural analysis method called total potential optimization using metaheuristic algorithms and combining features of harmony search, flower pollination, teaching-learning-based optimization, and the Jaya algorithm is developed by Yusuf Cengiz Toklu, Gebrail Bekdaş, Aylin Ece Kayabekir, Sinan Melih Nigdeli, and Melda Yücel in the chapter ``Total potential optimization using hybrid metaheuristics: a tunnel problem solved via plane stress members''. The method is applied to tunnel problems with plane stress properties. The buckling load of a symmetric laminated composite plate is obtained using analytical techniques in the chapter ``Buckling analysis and stacking sequence optimization of symmetric laminated composite plates'', written by Celal Cakiroglu and Gebrail Bekdaş. In order to optimize the stacking sequence configuration for any given plate geometry and material properties the Jaya algorithm is used. The reinforced concrete-retaining wall design problem of sustainability minimizing the total material cost and carbon dioxide emission is investigated by means of the harmony search algorithm in the chapter ``Sustainable optimum design of RC retaining walls: the influence of structural material and surrounding soil properties'' by Zülal Akbay Arama, Aylin Ece Kayabekir, and Gebrail Bekdaş. Four metaheuristic algorithms, namely harmony search, teaching-learning-based optimization, flower pollination algorithm, and the Jaya algorithm are proposed for the T-beam problem in the closing chapter ``Statistical evaluation of metaheuristic algorithm: an optimum reinforced concrete T-beam problem'' by Aylin Ece Kayabekir and Müge Nigdeli. The algorithms are compared statistically by means of the Friedman ranking test, one-way ANOVA test, post hoc Bonferroni test and independent samples t-test. The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.
