The Cauchy problem for a system of linear partial differential equations can be transformed (via Fourier transform) to the abstract Cauchy problem generated by a matrix multiplication operator (MMO). The author proves theorems characterizing a spectrum of MMO and giving necessary and sufficient conditions for MMO to be a generator of an integrated, analytic (eventually) differentiable and (eventually) norm continuous semigroup respectively. A series of easy examples shows that for MMO all mentioned types of semigroups are different.
