This paper shows that manifolds can be regarded as categories with homs enriched in a suitable bicategory. Closely related is the unpublished work of S. Kasangian and R. F. C. Walters. A recent remark of \textit{F. W. Lawvere} [Contemp. Math. 92, 261--299 (1989; Zbl 0675.18003)] is also relevant here: atlases can be avoided altogether since the category of smooth manifolds is simply obtained by splitting idempotents in the category of smooth maps between open subsets of Euclidean space. Errata corrige: An error in a proof of one theorem (Section 9.2) is corrected.
