The authors use reverse martingale techniques based on \(U\)-statistics to provide refinements of Jensen's inequality and improvements of some existing inequalities in analysis and approximation theory. A link is established with the subject of sampling with probability proportional to size, which in turn shows how to provide further refinements of the classical Jensen's inequality. The results complement those of \textit{R. A. Khan} [ibid. 80, No. 3, 367-377 (1995; Zbl 0823.41023)].
