The authors show that an irreducible weight module \(V\) with finite-dimensional weight spaces over an affine Lie algebra, such that the action of the central element on \(V\) is nontrivial (i.e. \(V\) has nonzero level), is the quotient of a generalized Verma module. This reduces the classification of irreducible nonzero level weight modules over affine Lie algebras to the classification of the irreducible torsion-free modules over algebras of type \(A_n\) and \(C_n\), completed in [\textit{O. Mathieu}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 50, 537-592 (2000; Zbl 0962.17002)].
