Recently, passively \(Q\)-switched solid state microchip lasers have been investigated both experimentally and numerically. The authors show that these lasers naturally exhibit damped intensity oscillations which satisfy a degenerate form of Lotka-Volterra equations. They also study Hopf bifurcation by using asymptotic methods. Lotka-Volterra equations appear as the leading order problem of allow to describe the nearly vertical bifurcation branch.
