The failure effect in materials has received much attention in last years. The essence of this effect consists in the apparition of small inelastic zones, usually a band type pattern. The feature of this phenomenon lies in the fact that there are a large scale behaviour obeying usual dynamical laws, and a small scale behaviour related to concentrated strain bands. Hence, the difficulties arise when one uses numerical methods, which leads to the appearance of localized (dissipative) models. Here, after developing the general multidimensional frame, the author examines the one-dimensional softening bar . A closed-form solution is obtained in the linear case. Numerical experiments confirm the validity of the developed theory.
