The manuscript studies a system of five coupled scalar delay-differential equations in a ring configuration. The system is assumed to have a unique equilibrium, the stability and bifurcations of which are investigated. In particular, the conditions for Hopf bifurcations and their direction (sub- or supercritical) are obtained. The center manifold and normal form theories are used.
