Let \(f\) be a holomorphic Hecke cusp form of even weight for the full modular group and write \(a(n)\) for the corresponding eigenvalues. In the present paper the authors study the variance \[ \sum_{b=1}^q \left| \sum_{\substack{ n \leq X \\ n \equiv b \pmod{q}}} a(n)\right|^2. \] In particular they find asymptotic formulae for this variance in the ranges \(X^{1/4+\varepsilon} \leq q \leq X^{1/2-\varepsilon}\) and \(X^{1/2+\varepsilon} \leq q \leq X^{1-\varepsilon}\), and notice that the behavior of the variance in these ranges is different, i.e. it changes around \(q = X^{1/2}\). They also show some results for the divisor function. The most important tool in the proofs is the Voronoi summation formula.
