The authors derive conditions for cluster synchronization in linearly coupled chaotic systems, \[ \dot{x_{i}}(t)=f(x_{i}) + \sum_{j=1}^{N}a_{ij}\Gamma x_{j}(t), \] where each node possesses the same uncoupled dynamics \(f(x)\). A class of coupling matrices \((a_{ij})\) is introduced and two conditions are given which are sufficient to ensure cluster synchronization of the chaotic network. The argument of the proofs makes use of a Ljapunov function approach. Further, the authors propose a mechanism to dynamically modify any given coupling matrix from the considered class such that the adapted coupling strengths will lead to cluster synchronization after some amount of time.
