The authors introduce a multiscale stochastic simulation algorithm to model processes characterized by two features: (1) simultaneous occurrence of both fast and slow reactions and (2) simultaneous involvement of species of high and low concentrations. The simultaneous occurrence of both fast and slow reactions means that once the fast reaction has occurred, its dynamics hardly influences the dynamics of the slow one. The involvement of species with low concentrations means that the continuous model of the process might need to replaced (partly) by a stochastic one. Implementation details are discussed and the performance of the algorithm is illustrated by modelling the heat shock response of the bacterium E.Coli to prove the efficiency and accuracy of the new algorithm.
