The authors discuss left, right, and two-sided tangential filtering decompositions. The filtering preconditioner constructed by the above decompositions is combined with the efficient classic \(ILU(0)\) preconditioner in multiplicative ways. The composite preconditioners are very efficient in damping the high and low frequency modes, and thus perform very well for the block tridiagonal linear systems arising from the discretization of partial differential equation problems on Cartesian grids. The adopted filtering vector \(\mathbf e=[1,1,\dots,1]^T\) is as efficient as other vectors without the need to construct the filtering preconditioner as with other methods. Used as left filtering filter, \(\mathbf e\) can enable the zero balance error throughout the iteration and thus improves convergence.
