    Consider the following strongly coupled quasilinear parabolic system \[ \begin{cases} u_t=v^{\alpha}\Delta u+u(a_1-b_1u+c_1v), \\ v_t=u^{\beta}\Delta v+v(a_2+b_2u-c_2v), \end{cases} \qquad x\in \Omega,\;t>0 \] under the boundary condition \(u(x,t)=v(x,t)=0\) for \(x\in \partial \Omega\), \(t>0\), and the initial condition \(u(x,0)=u_0(x), v(x,0)=v_0(x)\) for \(x\in \Omega\). Here \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) (\(N\geq 1\)) with smooth boundary \(\partial \Omega\), \(\alpha, \beta\geq 0\), \(a_i,b_i,c_i>0\) are constants, and the initial data satisfy the conditions \(u_0,v_0\in C_0^1(\bar \Omega)\), \(u_0(x),v_0(x)>0\) for \(x\in \Omega\), and \({\partial u_0\over \partial {\mathbf n}}<0, {\partial v_0\over \partial {\mathbf n}}<0\) for \(x\in \partial \Omega\), where \({\mathbf n}\) is the outward normal on \(\partial \Omega\). This system represents a cooperating two-species Lotka-Volterra population model with cross-diffusion. The authors show that the system has a classical positive local solution \((u,v)\). If \(b_1c_2>b_2c_1\), then the solution is global and uniformly bounded on \(\bar \Omega\times [0,\infty)\), while if \(b_1<c_1\), \(c_2<b_2\), \(\alpha,\beta\leq 1\), and \(\lambda_1<\min\{(c_1-b_1)/\alpha, a_1/(1-\alpha),(b_2-c_2)/\beta, a_2/(1-\beta)\}\), then the solution blows up in finite time. Here \(\lambda_1\) is the first eigenvalue of \(-\Delta\) under the null Dirichlet boundary condition on \(\partial \Omega\).
