This paper summarizes the career of János (later Johnny) von Neumann as a mathematician, from his early interests in axiomatic set theory, his association with David Hilbert at Göttingen and his papers on the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics, his development of what have come to be known as von Neumann algebras, his move to Princeton in 1930-31, his work during World War Two on ballistics and the development of the atomic bomb, and his other interests in ergodicity, game theory, and computer architecture.
