In investigating a certain optimization problem in biogeography in [``Biogeography-based optimization'', IEEE Trans. Evol. Comput. 12, No. 6, 702--713 (2008)], \textit{D. Simon} encountered a certain tridiagonal matrix with a special structure, and made a conjecture regarding its eigenvalues. In the paper under review, the authors establish the validity of that conjecture. Their proof is considerably simplified by \textit{Q. M. Al-Hassan} and this reviewer in a paper that will appear in [Applicationes Mathematicae].
