The paper deals with the structure of representation varieties \(\mathrm{Rep}_d(\Lambda)\) for a finite dimensional algebra \(\Lambda\) over an algebraically closed field. For hereditary algebras, this variety has been studied by V. Kac, Schofield, and many others. In the paper under review, the author considers local truncated path algebras, that is, local quiver algebras modulo all paths of a fixed length \(L+1\). The main result determines the irreducible components of \(\mathrm{Rep}_d(\Lambda)\) in terms of radical layers. For a given module \(M\), the radical layers \(S_i:=J^i M/J^{i+1}M\) give a sequence \(S=(S_0,\dots,S_L)\) of semisimple modules, \(J\) being the radical of \(\Lambda\). If \(d>L+1\), the irreducible components of \(\mathrm{Rep}_d(\Lambda)\) are the closures \(\overline{\mathrm{Rep } S}\) of certain locally closed subvarieties \(\mathrm{Rep } S\) of modules with radical layering \(S\) which are determined explicitly. For \(d\leq L+1\), the variety \(\mathrm{Rep}_d(\Lambda)\) is irreducible, and the modules are generically uniserial.
