The authors construct Peierls-Onsager effective Hamiltonians for a large class of periodic elliptic magnetic pseudodifferential operators in a gauge covariant setting. Their approach is based on the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus previously developed by them and M. Mantoiu, and in the papers [\textit{V. S. Buslaev}, Russ. Math. Surv. 42, No. 6, 97--125 (1987; Zbl 0698.35130); translation from Usp. Mat. Nauk 42, No. 6, 77--98 (1987)] and [\textit{C. Gerard} et al., Commun. Math. Phys. 142, No. 2, 217--244 (1991; Zbl 0753.35057)]. The obtained results can be applied to magnetic Schrödinger or relativistic Schrödinger magnetic operators perturbed with a smooth periodic electric potential.
