It is proved that a monotone translation invariant valuation \(\Phi\) on the space \({\mathcal K}^ n\) of convex bodies in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) which is homogeneous of degree n-1 must be of the form \(\Phi (K)=V(K,...,K,L)\) for \(K\in {\mathcal K}^ n\), where L is a suitable convex body and V denotes the mixed volume. As a consequence, a criterion for summands in terms of mixed volumes is obtained.
