A finite element method, coupled with second-order time discretization, is used to study numerically the migration of the interface in the Cahn- Hilliard problem. Results are presented to support the view that there is a connection between this problem and the quasi-static model of solidification. A linear stability analysis is given for the quasi-static problem.
