\textit{T. S. Blyth} and \textit{R. McFadden} [J. Algebra 81, 1-22 (1983; Zbl 0518.20058)] described the structure of all regular semigroups S which contain a normal medial idempotent u (that is, \(x=xux\) for all x in \(<E>\), and the subband \(u<E>u\) is a semilattice). The author extends this theory to a class of abundant semigroups S in which the idempotents generate a regular subsemigroup and possess a normal medial idempotent u such that uSu is a type A semigroup (for background see \textit{J. B. Fountain} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 44, 103-129 (1982; Zbl 0481.20036)]). Paralleling the state of affairs in the regular case, the construction has for its `building blocks' the idempotent-generated regular subsemigroups with normal medial idempotent, together with the type A monoids.
