A simple test is given for determining whether a given matrix Q (which may be taken to be orthogonal) is the eigenvector matrix of some unreduced symmetric tridiagonal matrix. A list of known necessary conditions is provided, and a bound on the number of zeros in a row of such a Q is given in the final section along with a result connecting eigenvalue separation in tridiagonals and the top row of the normalized eigenvector matrix.
