Let \(F\) be a compact Riemann surface which is equipped with a metric of constant negative curvature \(-1\). There is a strictly hyperbolic Fuchsian group \(\Gamma\) so that \(F=\Gamma\backslash\mathbb{H}\) where \(\mathbb{H}\) is the upper half plane. Let \(\{0=\lambda_1<\lambda_1\leq\dots\}\) be the spectrum of the Laplacian and let \(N(x):=\#\{n\geq0:\lambda_n\leq x\}\) be the spectral counting function. Renormalize the eigenvalues to express \(\lambda_n=r_n^2+4\). The author establishes a specific estimate that for \(t\geq3\) and \(t\notin\{r_n\}\), \[ N\left(t^2+\frac14\right)=\frac{\text{Vol}(F)}{4\pi}t^2-\frac{1}{\pi}S(t)+F(t) \] where \(S=S_\Gamma\) is given explicitly. and where \(F=F_\Gamma\) is a bounded continuous function with asymptotics \(F(t)=C_0+C_1/t+C_2/t^2+\dots\) where \(C_i=C_i(\Gamma)\). Various consequences are derived.
