A set-valued function \(\Phi\) mapping \(R^ n\) into the set I(R) of all closed intervals contained in R is said to be ordinarily approximately lower semi continuous (o.a.l.s.c.) if for every open set \(V\subset R\) the set \(A=\{x\in R^ k:\Phi(x)\cap V\neq \emptyset \}\) is \(F_{\sigma}\) having density 1 in every point \(x\in A\). A function \(\psi:R^ n\to I(R)\) is said to be ordinarily approximately continuous if there exists \(\Phi:R^ n\to I(R)\) o.a.l.s.c. such that \(\Phi(x)\subset \psi(x)\) for every \(x\in R^ n.\) A function \(\phi:R^ n\to R\) is said to be a selection for a set-valued function \(\Phi\) if \(\phi(x)\subset \Phi(x)\) for every \(x\in R^ n.\) The main theorem: A set-valued function \(\Phi:R^ n\to I(R)\) admits an approximately continuous selection if and only if it is ordinarily approximately continuous. As an application the author obtains a generalization of a theorem by \textit{M. Laczkovich} and \textit{G. Petruska} [Acta Math. Acad. Sci. Hung. 25, 189-212 (1974; Zbl 0279.26003)] on the prolongation of functions belonging to the first class of Baire. Reviewer's remark. The generalization of the Laczkovich and Petruska theorem is a special case of a prior and more general result of \textit{Z. Grande} and \textit{M. Topolewska} [Čas. Peštování Mat. 107, 333-340 (1982; Zbl 0511.26004)].
