We present an alternative approach to the direct design of 1-D recursive digital filters satisfying prescribed magnitude specifications with or without constant group delay characteristic. This method uses an iterative method to calculate the coefficients of the filter's transfer function and guarantees the stability of the designed filter using a new stability test reported by \textit{V. Ramachandran} and \textit{C. S. Gargour} [J. Franklin Inst. 317, 341-358 (1984; Zbl 0538.93056)]. To illustrate the usefulness of the technique, examples are given.
