A C-group \(G\) is a group generated by a set of involutions \(s_i\), \(i\in I\), satisfying an intersection property \(\langle s_j\mid j\in J\rangle\cap\langle s_k\mid k\in K\rangle=\langle s_l\mid l\in J\cap K\rangle\) for all subsets \(J,K\) of \(I\). The rank of \(G\) is the largest cardinality of \(I\) for such a C-group representation of \(G\). In this paper the authors consider the groups \(\mathrm{PSL}(2,q)\) and \(\mathrm{PGL}(2,q)\), \(q\geq 4\). They show that in the first case the rank is four iff \(q\in\{7,9,11,19,31\}\) and in the second case the rank is four iff \(q=5\). In all remaining cases the rank is three. The rank three case has been considered by \textit{M. Conder} et al. [J. Aust. Math. Soc. 85, No. 2, 155-175 (2008; Zbl 1181.57003)].
