This is a 2009 re-edition of the 1958 paper by Teruo Sunaga. The original paper [RAAG, Res. Notes, III. Ser., Unifying Study Basic Probl. Engin. Phys. Sci. by Means of Geom. 2, 29--46 (1958; Zbl 0176.13201)], published as a kind of technical report, received little attention and did not influence the main stream of interval analysis initiated by R. E. Moore in the 1960s. Even in 1999, \textit{S. Markov} and \textit{K. Okumura} in their paper about Sunaga's achievements [Developments in reliable computing. SCAN-98 conference, 8th international symposium on Scientific computing, computer arithmetic and validated numerics. Budapest, Hungary, September 22--25, 1998. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers. 167--188 (1999; Zbl 0949.65045)] noted that his work ``is not well known amongst specialists in the field''. The present re-edition is likely to contribute to an improvement of this situation; in fact, the readers will find out that Sunaga predated the future developments by years.
