A near polygon is a finite partial linear space \(\mathcal S\) such that for every point \(p\) and every line \(L\) there exists a unique point on \(L\) nearest to \(p\), where distance is measured in the point or collinearity graph of \(\mathcal S\). A near polygon is called dense, if every line is incident with at least three points and if any two points at distance 2 have at least two common neighbors. A near polygon is called slim, if every line is incident with exactly three points. The authors classify all slim dense near octagons. Any such octagon is isomorphic to exactly one octagon of a list of 24 pairwise non-isomorphic examples. All slim dense near octagons can be described explicitly.
