Functionally-fitted methods are a generalization of exponentially-fitted methods, in which the class of possible basis functions is widened. The formulation in this paper is based on the collocation approach and, as a special case, the classical \(s\)-stage Runge-Kutta methods with stage-order \(s\), result from polynomial collocation. With reference to existing work, such as the one by \textit{K. Ozawa} [Japan J. Ind. Appl. Math. 18, 107--130 (2001; Zbl 0985.65085)], it is stated: ``This paper shows that functionally-fitted methods can be derived with less restrictive conditions than previously stated in the literature, and that other related results can be derived in a much more elegant way''.
